The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates international trade. The WTO officially commenced on 1 January 1995 under the Marrakesh Agreement, signed by 123 nations on 15 April 1994, replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which commenced in 1948.

The data on company programs is pulled from public information companies have made available on those programs. 62 programs in the open platform are based on the data those companies have submitted to the Access Observatory at Boston University. The data for these programs has been reviewed by both the companies and the Access Observatory team. The open platform also leverages the taxonomy of strategies and activities that Access Accelerated engaged Boston University to develop to characterize and aggregate the contribution of Access Accelerated efforts. The open platform includes an additional 27 company programs that have not yet gone through the more comprehensive Access Observatory process.
